Picnic & BBQ Season: 7 Secrets to Eating Right

If you’re trying to eat lighter, warm-weather food can present some challenges (think: chips, burgers, potatoes…). Try these smart strategies at your next barbecue or picnic:


DON’T GO HUNGRY


If your goal is not to overeat, one of the biggest mistakes you can make is to starve yourself all day so you can indulge later on. If you show up famished to a big meal, you’re more likely to pig out. Instead, stay satiated with a light snack beforehand.


GET MOVING


When you arrive, indulge in a fun activity such as volleyball, a sack race or tag. You’ll avoid mindless snacking and have a blast!

STAY HYDRATED


Drink a glass of water before you eat. (We often confuse thirst for hunger.) Avoid alcoholic beverages and sugary sodas.

WATCH THE TOPPINGS


Sauces and dressings can be high in fat and calories, so top off your food with moderation. Try dressing your burger or hot dog with chopped onions, lettuce and tomato.
